The Threshold of Life Memorial reflects Montana’s strong culture of donation and service. Currently, 86% of Montanans are registered organ donors — significantly higher than the national average. The memorial aims to honor that legacy and the donors, both the living and those who, in their passing, gave the gift of life.
The planned memorial is a unique and special project of statewide significance to honor all of Montana’s organ, eye and tissue donors. It stands as a beacon of hope for those awaiting lifesaving transplants and celebrates the lives of all individuals impacted by organ donation from every corner of Montana.
Designed by Bozeman-based architect Ken VanDeWalle and approved by the 2023 Montana State Legislature, the planned memorial will be located on the grounds of the State Capitol. In accordance with House Bill 585, the cost of the memorial’s procurement, installation and maintenance must be paid from private funds.

In order to complete the memorial, the Montana Governor’s Office of Community Service has partnered with the Helena Area Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3), to serve as the fiscal sponsor for this project. They are actively raising the $500,000 needed for the project.
“Through the Threshold of Life Memorial, we will give hope to those awaiting lifesaving transplants while celebrating the lives of those impacted by organ donation,” Gov. Greg Gianforte stated. “May we all be reminded and thankful for donors who give the ultimate gift and be encouraged to support the memorial that will honor their lives.”
In addition to fundraising for the Threshold of Life Memorial, Donate Life Montana is proud to announce the release of its new license plate design. A portion of the proceeds from each plate will go toward the memorial fund and help support educational and outreach efforts on organ, eye and tissue donation.
